Painters in Whitby

Absolut Painting paints homes in Whitby: interiors, exteriors, stairwells, porches and cabinets across the downtown streets, the south end and Brooklin. Whitby keeps two clocks. Downtown has houses old enough to have plaster, narrow stairs, painted wood porches and trim with a century of coats on it. Brooklin and the newer subdivisions around it are recent, with nine foot ceilings, square drywall and a single coat of builder flat over walls and ceilings alike. We walk the house with you and write a quote that lists each step of prep.

Whitby in detail

Whitby, on the ground.

In the older houses the painting is prep-heavy. Plaster is filled and primed, trim is sanded back and enamelled, and the narrow stair halls take a plank set carefully over a flight with no landing to stand on. Porches outside need scraping, priming and a porch enamel that stands up to boots and snow. In Brooklin the question is usually the opposite: everything is one off-white, walls and ceilings together, and the repaint is about choosing a ceiling white, a wall colour and a trim white that read as three surfaces instead of one. That takes a primer over the builder flat and clean hand-cut lines.

On site, furniture is moved and covered, floors protected, holes filled, cracks caulked, sanded and spot-primed. Two full coats, with tape pulled while the paint is still soft. Doors and trim sprayed where the room can be sealed. The crew cleans up every day and walks the finished rooms with you before leaving, then returns for a touch-up visit. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams paint, a [2-year] written workmanship warranty, insured and WSIB covered [John confirms]. John Kotlar quotes the job and leads the crew in Whitby and Brooklin alike, from the first walkthrough on.

Newer parts of Whitby come in one builder colour from floor to ceiling, so the first repaint is as much about separating the surfaces as about choosing a colour.

Housing

Whitby ranges from older downtown houses with plaster, narrow stairs and wood porches to recent subdivisions in Brooklin and the south end in builder flat paint.

Access and logistics

Older streets can mean street parking and tight stairs that take a plank setup, while Brooklin driveways and garages make staging easy.

Jobs we see most

First repaints over builder paint in Brooklin, downtown plaster and trim, stairwells, porches and exterior trim, and cabinet refinishing are the steady Whitby work.

Questions from Whitby

Our downtown Whitby stairwell is narrow and straight, with no landing. How do you paint the wall above it?

With an adjustable ladder that sits level on two different steps, or a plank between that ladder and a second one at the top, secured before anyone climbs. The railing is padded and the treads are covered. The crew works the wall in sections from the top down and keeps a wet edge so the sheen stays even. It is slow, careful work and it is listed on its own on the quote.

In our Brooklin house the ceilings and walls are the same colour. Should the ceilings be a different white?

Yes, in nearly every case. A flat ceiling white above a wall colour, even a pale one, makes the ceiling look higher and the room look finished. The two are cut apart by hand at the corner. If you like white walls, a slightly warmer or cooler white on the walls and a pure flat white on the ceiling still gives the separation. We paint sample patches so you can see the difference in your light.

The wood railings and posts on our front porch are peeling. Can you repaint them?

Yes. Porch wood is scraped to a sound edge, sanded, spot-primed on bare wood and painted with two coats of exterior enamel, and the floor with a porch and floor paint made for foot traffic. Soft or rotten pieces are pointed out before painting rather than painted over. Porch work is booked for warm, dry weather so the coats cure properly.
