Drywall repair and painting

A repair that shows is not a repair. Absolut patches holes, tapes cracks, resets nail pops and skims rough walls, then primes the compound and paints the whole wall so no patch outline reads in raking light. We handle the small jobs a drywall contractor will not come out for, and the larger ones that come before a full repaint.

What is included

On the quote, from the start.

  1. 01Holes from doorknobs, anchors and plumbing access patched with new board or a backed patch, not just filler
  2. 02Cracks at corners, over doors and along seams cut back, taped with mesh or paper and filled in layers
  3. 03Nail pops reset with new screws and filled, then sanded flush
  4. 04Rough or previously textured walls skimmed with compound and sanded smooth
  5. 05All repairs primed with a drywall primer so the patch takes paint the same as the wall around it
  6. 06The repaired wall painted corner to corner in two coats so there is no halo where the patch was
What moves the quote

No figures published. The drivers, in order.

DriverWhat we look at
Size and number of repairsA few anchor holes is an hour of filling. A wall with a dozen patches, or a full skim coat, is a multi-day job with drying time between coats.
Depth of damageSurface dents take one coat of compound. Holes through the board need a backer and new drywall, and water damage may need the board cut out.
Matching the surrounding finishA smooth wall is straightforward. A textured, stippled or orange-peel wall needs the texture recreated so the patch blends.
Repainting scopePainting the patch alone will show. Painting the whole wall, or the whole room, is what makes the repair vanish and sets the paint time.

Drying time, not labour, stretches a drywall job. Compound needs to cure between coats, so a small repair can still span [n] days even if the crew is only there a few hours each visit. Read the cost guide.

How this job runs

Walk-through, prep, paint, walk-through.

The four steps in full.

John looks at every repair, taps the wall around it and checks for moisture if the damage looks like water. The written quote lists each patch, what it needs and whether the wall or the room is being repainted afterward.

Floors and furniture are covered. Damaged board is cut out square and replaced, cracks are opened and taped, holes get a backer and compound goes on in thin coats with drying time between them. Sanding is done with a vacuum sander to keep dust down.

Repairs are primed with a drywall primer, then the wall is painted in two coats with hand-cut edges. Skim coats and large patches take [n] days because of drying. The walk-through is done with a light held low against the wall, which is the hardest test a patch can pass.

Questions about drywall repair and painting

Why does my old patch show through the paint?

Usually because the compound was not primed, so it drank the paint and dried to a different sheen, or because only the patch was painted and the new paint does not match the aged paint around it. We prime every repair and paint the full wall, and the patch goes away.

Can you fix cracks that keep coming back?

Most recurring cracks are at corners and over door frames where the house moves with the seasons. We cut them back, tape them with paper tape or a flexible crack tape and fill in layers, which holds far better than filler pushed into the crack. A crack that is wide, growing or stepped is a structural question and we say so.

Do you repair water-damaged drywall?

Yes, once the leak is fixed and the wall is dry. Soft or stained board is cut out and replaced, the stain is sealed with a shellac or oil-based primer and the wall is repainted. If the board is dry and firm but stained, priming alone is often enough.

Can you make a textured wall smooth?

Yes. Orange peel, knockdown and stipple are skimmed over with two or three coats of compound, sanded, primed and painted. It is a slow, dusty job done with a vacuum sander and the room sealed. Textured ceilings are handled the same way after a test for asbestos in older homes.

How long does a drywall repair take?

A handful of small holes is a day of filling and painting, usually spread across two visits for drying. A full wall skim is [n] days. Larger replacement work runs [n] days. The quote gives the visit schedule so you know when the room is free.
