Painters in Scarborough
Absolut Painting paints homes in Scarborough: interiors, exteriors, ceilings, trim and cabinets. The housing is mostly postwar bungalows and side-splits on wide lots, built with drywall, and that makes the walls the easy part. The ceilings are not. Many of these houses still have the original textured popcorn ceiling, often stained or patched, and the decision about what to do with it comes before the colour decision. We walk the house with you, look at the ceilings, the trim and the exterior brick and stucco, and write a quote that lists every step of prep.
Scarborough, on the ground.
A bungalow from the 1950s or 1960s has drywall that has been painted many times, so the surface is usually sound but the corners and nail heads have started to show. The crew fills the pops, sands the ridges and primes the repairs so they do not flash through the new coat. Popcorn ceilings can be painted with a thick roller sleeve once the loose texture is sealed, or scraped and skimmed flat where you want a smooth ceiling. Side-splits add a stairwell with a tall wall above the half flight, which takes a plank and a ladder rather than a reach from the stairs.
The job itself is plain. Furniture to the centre and covered, floors and railings protected, holes filled, cracks caulked, sanded and spot-primed. Two full coats on walls and ceilings, with the lines at the ceiling and the trim cut by hand. Doors and trim get a sprayed or brushed enamel depending on the room. The crew cleans up every day and walks through the finished rooms with you before leaving. The work carries a [2-year] written workmanship warranty and a touch-up visit. John Kotlar prices the job, leads the crew and signs off at the end.
In Scarborough the ceiling is often the biggest decision in the house, so we price painting the texture and removing it as two separate options.
Scarborough is largely postwar bungalows and side-splits with drywall walls, textured popcorn ceilings and brick or stucco exteriors.
Driveways are wide and front doors open onto a short hall, so the crew can park on site and stage ladders, planks and sprayers in the garage.
Whole-house interiors with ceilings, stairwells in side-splits, trim and doors, and exterior brick, stucco and trim make up most of the Scarborough work.

Questions from Scarborough
Should we paint our popcorn ceiling or have it removed?
Both are done in Scarborough bungalows. Painting is the smaller job: the texture is sealed, stains are blocked with a shellac primer and the ceiling is rolled with a deep-pile sleeve. Removal means scraping, skimming the drywall flat, sanding and priming before paint, which is more days and more dust but leaves a modern ceiling. [Texture applied before 1980 may contain asbestos and should be tested before scraping.] We quote both so you can choose.
How do you reach the tall wall above the stairs in a side-split?
With a plank set between a ladder on the landing and a ladder on the stair, levelled and secured, or an adjustable stair ladder where the flight is narrow. The crew masks the railing and protects the treads before anything goes up. It is routine for us, but it is a reason the stairwell is listed as its own line on the quote.
Can the brick on our Scarborough bungalow be painted?
Yes, with the right product and the right prep. Brick is washed, loose mortar is repaired, and a masonry primer goes on before a breathable masonry paint, so moisture inside the wall can still escape. Painted brick is a one-way decision, because taking paint off brick later is difficult, so we talk that through at the walkthrough before you commit.
