Trim, doors and railings in Whitby

Trim, doors and railings get filled, caulked, sanded and finished in a hard waterborne enamel, with doors sprayed flat where it suits. First repaints over builder paint in Brooklin, downtown plaster and trim, stairwells, porches and exterior trim, and cabinet refinishing are the steady Whitby work.

Trim, doors and railings · Whitby

Whitby, on the ground.

Whitby ranges from older downtown houses with plaster, narrow stairs and wood porches to recent subdivisions in Brooklin and the south end in builder flat paint. Older homes carry layers of oil paint and stained oak that need a bonding primer, and newer homes carry primed MDF trim that needs filling at the joints before the first finish coat. Older streets can mean street parking and tight stairs that take a plank setup, while Brooklin driveways and garages make staging easy. Floors are papered, trim is filled and caulked, doors come off for spraying, two coats go on and the tape is pulled while the paint is soft for a clean line.

Newer parts of Whitby come in one builder colour from floor to ceiling, so the first repaint is as much about separating the surfaces as about choosing a colour.

What moves the quote in Whitby

No figures published. The drivers, in order.

DriverWhat we look at
Metres of trim and number of doorsEach door has two faces and four edges. A main floor with ten doors and crown throughout is a different job from a hallway.
Existing finishPreviously painted trim needs a sand and two coats. Stained and varnished trim needs degreasing, a thorough sand and a bonding primer first.
Profile and detailFlat modern trim brushes quickly. Colonial profiles, panelled doors and turned spindles take more time per piece.
Spray or brushSpraying doors and rails gives the smoothest finish but needs more masking. We recommend the method that suits each piece.

Trim is often added to an interior walls quote, and the two together take fewer days than booking them apart because the room is only protected once. The quote shows trim as its own line either way.

Trim, doors and railings questions from Whitby

Can you paint just the trim in my Whitby home?

Yes. Trim on its own is a common job in Whitby, especially when the walls are fine and the baseboards and doors have gone yellow. We protect the floors and walls, prep and paint the trim and leave the rest untouched.

Do you paint stair railings in Whitby?

Yes. Rails, newel posts and spindles are sanded and finished by hand, in white, black or a colour that matches the trim. A railing in a Whitby home is usually [n] days including cure time between coats.

Our downtown Whitby stairwell is narrow and straight, with no landing. How do you paint the wall above it?

With an adjustable ladder that sits level on two different steps, or a plank between that ladder and a second one at the top, secured before anyone climbs. The railing is padded and the treads are covered. The crew works the wall in sections from the top down and keeps a wet edge so the sheen stays even. It is slow, careful work and it is listed on its own on the quote.

In our Brooklin house the ceilings and walls are the same colour. Should the ceilings be a different white?

Yes, in nearly every case. A flat ceiling white above a wall colour, even a pale one, makes the ceiling look higher and the room look finished. The two are cut apart by hand at the corner. If you like white walls, a slightly warmer or cooler white on the walls and a pure flat white on the ceiling still gives the separation. We paint sample patches so you can see the difference in your light.
