Trim, doors and railings in Ajax

Driveways and attached garages give the crew a clear path, and the work runs room by room around a family living in the house. Floors are papered, trim is filled and caulked, doors come off for spraying, two coats go on and the tape is pulled while the paint is soft for a clean line. Trim, doors and railings get filled, caulked, sanded and finished in a hard waterborne enamel, with doors sprayed flat where it suits.

Trim, doors and railings · Ajax

Ajax, on the ground.

Ajax is dominated by drywall subdivision houses from the 1990s onward, mostly occupied by families, with a band of older plaster streets near the lake. Older homes carry layers of oil paint and stained oak that need a bonding primer, and newer homes carry primed MDF trim that needs filling at the joints before the first finish coat. Family-house interiors in washable finishes, hallways and stairs, feature walls, trim and doors, and cabinet refinishing are the common Ajax jobs.

Many houses in Ajax are full of children, so the finishes are chosen to be wiped down and the rooms are returned to use each evening.

No figures published. The drivers, in order.

DriverWhat we look at
Metres of trim and number of doorsEach door has two faces and four edges. A main floor with ten doors and crown throughout is a different job from a hallway.
Existing finishPreviously painted trim needs a sand and two coats. Stained and varnished trim needs degreasing, a thorough sand and a bonding primer first.
Profile and detailFlat modern trim brushes quickly. Colonial profiles, panelled doors and turned spindles take more time per piece.
Spray or brushSpraying doors and rails gives the smoothest finish but needs more masking. We recommend the method that suits each piece.

Trim is often added to an interior walls quote, and the two together take fewer days than booking them apart because the room is only protected once. The quote shows trim as its own line either way.

Trim, doors and railings questions from Ajax

Can you paint just the trim in my Ajax home?

Yes. Trim on its own is a common job in Ajax, especially when the walls are fine and the baseboards and doors have gone yellow. We protect the floors and walls, prep and paint the trim and leave the rest untouched.

Do you paint stair railings in Ajax?

Yes. Rails, newel posts and spindles are sanded and finished by hand, in white, black or a colour that matches the trim. A railing in a Ajax home is usually [n] days including cure time between coats.

Our walls are covered in scuffs and dents from the kids. Do we need the whole house repainted?

Not always. If the colour is staying and the paint is only a few years old, the worst rooms and the hallway can be repaired and repainted on their own, with the new paint feathered into the old at a corner. If the colour is changing or the paint is older, a full repaint reads better, because touched-up areas show in side light. We tell you which case you are in at the walkthrough.

Can you do just one feature wall?

Yes. A single wall is a normal job, and it is where a deep colour belongs in most Ajax houses. The wall is filled and sanded, primed with a grey-tinted primer matched to the colour, and given two coats with the edges cut by hand at the ceiling, the trim and the inside corners. Both neighbouring walls are masked so the line is crisp. A small job, and one we are happy to book on its own.
