Trim, doors and railings in Scugog

Scugog centres on Port Perry's heritage streets, with plaster and painted wood, and the houses ringing Lake Scugog, many of them winterized cottages and additions with sunrooms. Older homes carry layers of oil paint and stained oak that need a bonding primer, and newer homes carry primed MDF trim that needs filling at the joints before the first finish coat. Trim, doors and railings get filled, caulked, sanded and finished in a hard waterborne enamel, with doors sprayed flat where it suits.

Trim, doors and railings · Scugog

Scugog, on the ground.

Sunrooms and bright lakeside rooms, winterized cottage repairs, heritage trim and exteriors, whole-house interiors and cabinet refinishing are the common Scugog jobs. Floors are papered, trim is filled and caulked, doors come off for spraying, two coats go on and the tape is pulled while the paint is soft for a clean line.

Lakeside rooms in Scugog are lit from three sides, so the walls are prepped flat and painted in a low sheen that does not broadcast every roller mark.

No figures published. The drivers, in order.

DriverWhat we look at
Metres of trim and number of doorsEach door has two faces and four edges. A main floor with ten doors and crown throughout is a different job from a hallway.
Existing finishPreviously painted trim needs a sand and two coats. Stained and varnished trim needs degreasing, a thorough sand and a bonding primer first.
Profile and detailFlat modern trim brushes quickly. Colonial profiles, panelled doors and turned spindles take more time per piece.
Spray or brushSpraying doors and rails gives the smoothest finish but needs more masking. We recommend the method that suits each piece.

Trim is often added to an interior walls quote, and the two together take fewer days than booking them apart because the room is only protected once. The quote shows trim as its own line either way.

Trim, doors and railings questions from Scugog

Can you paint just the trim in my Scugog home?

Yes. Trim on its own is a common job in Scugog, especially when the walls are fine and the baseboards and doors have gone yellow. We protect the floors and walls, prep and paint the trim and leave the rest untouched.

Do you paint stair railings in Scugog?

Yes. Rails, newel posts and spindles are sanded and finished by hand, in white, black or a colour that matches the trim. A railing in a Scugog home is usually [n] days including cure time between coats.

Our sunroom has windows on three sides and the walls look blotchy in daylight. How do you avoid that?

By prepping the wall flat and choosing the sheen carefully. The crew sands and skims any uneven filler, primes the whole wall so the surface is uniform, and rolls the finish in full-height passes with a wet edge so there are no laps. A matte or low-sheen eggshell hides small flaws that a satin would broadcast in that much light. We paint a sample patch so you see it in the actual room.

The paint peels every winter at the ceiling corners of our winterized cottage. Why, and can it be fixed?

Warm indoor air meets a cold, poorly insulated corner and condenses there, and the moisture lifts the paint. Painting alone will not stop it, but the right prep helps: the loose paint is scraped, the area is sealed with a stain-blocking primer and finished with a paint made for humid rooms. If the corners are wet rather than damp, the insulation or ventilation needs attention first, and we tell you so before painting.
