Exterior painting in Scugog

Exterior painting is mostly prep: wash, scrape, sand, prime and caulk, then two coats of a paint built for Ontario weather. Sunrooms and bright lakeside rooms, winterized cottage repairs, heritage trim and exteriors, whole-house interiors and cabinet refinishing are the common Scugog jobs.

Exterior painting · Scugog

Scugog, on the ground.

Scugog centres on Port Perry's heritage streets, with plaster and painted wood, and the houses ringing Lake Scugog, many of them winterized cottages and additions with sunrooms. Older houses bring wood siding, cedar trim and layered paint that needs scraping and priming, and newer ones bring stucco, fibre cement and vinyl that need the right primer and a vinyl-safe colour. Narrow halls in the older village houses and sloping lakeside driveways decide where the crew parks and how the ladders come in. The crew washes and dries the house, scrapes and primes failing areas, masks windows and plants, paints the body then the trim and walks the property with you at the end.

Lakeside rooms in Scugog are lit from three sides, so the walls are prepped flat and painted in a low sheen that does not broadcast every roller mark.

What moves the quote in Scugog

No figures published. The drivers, in order.

DriverWhat we look at
Surface and its conditionSound siding needing a wash and two coats is the baseline. Peeling paint, bare wood and failed caulking add scraping, priming and repair hours.
Height and accessA bungalow is reached from ladders. A two or three-storey house with steep grades may need staging or a lift.
MaterialSmooth siding rolls quickly. Rough stucco, brick and cedar drink more paint and take more time per square metre.
Trim, doors and detailWindow grilles, shutters, railings and decorative trim are brushed by hand and add time out of proportion to their area.

The season and the weather set the schedule as much as the scope does. We quote from a walk around the house, not from a photo, and the quote separates the body of the house from the trim.

Exterior painting questions from Scugog

How early in the year can you start exteriors in Scugog?

Once overnight temperatures in Scugog stay above the paint's limit and the surfaces are dry. That is usually [May] for standard paint and a few weeks earlier with the low-temperature lines. We book spring exteriors over the winter.

Do I need a permit to paint my house in Scugog?

No permit is needed for painting an existing house in Scugog. Heritage-designated properties can have colour rules, so if your home is listed we ask before quoting a colour change.

Our sunroom has windows on three sides and the walls look blotchy in daylight. How do you avoid that?

By prepping the wall flat and choosing the sheen carefully. The crew sands and skims any uneven filler, primes the whole wall so the surface is uniform, and rolls the finish in full-height passes with a wet edge so there are no laps. A matte or low-sheen eggshell hides small flaws that a satin would broadcast in that much light. We paint a sample patch so you see it in the actual room.

The paint peels every winter at the ceiling corners of our winterized cottage. Why, and can it be fixed?

Warm indoor air meets a cold, poorly insulated corner and condenses there, and the moisture lifts the paint. Painting alone will not stop it, but the right prep helps: the loose paint is scraped, the area is sealed with a stain-blocking primer and finished with a paint made for humid rooms. If the corners are wet rather than damp, the insulation or ventilation needs attention first, and we tell you so before painting.
